DEA can provide education payments to eligible spouses and children. It can support approved school programs or job training. Payments go to the beneficiary.
Current college payment examples
For October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027, the monthly college rates for a full month of enrollment are:
- Full time: $1,621
- Three quarter time: $1,281
- Half time: $939
Partial months are prorated. Other training types and lower enrollment levels have different rules. Confirm your rate with VA.

Use VA Form 22-5490. After applying, contact your school’s certifying official about enrollment certification and follow VA’s enrollment verification instructions.

This benefit is for qualifying spouses and children, not the sponsor based solely on their own service. Both applicant and sponsor requirements apply, including qualifying permanent and total service connected disability or other qualifying circumstances. A 100% rating alone does not confirm permanent and total status. Time limits vary by eligibility date and circumstances.
